Frederick Thomas Stokes (SN 2371) born in Ballarat, was a married 43 year old dealer when he enlisted in Ballarat on September 19th 1916. On October 20th he embarked aboard the Port Lincoln to join the 39th Infantry Battalion in England. His further training in England was limited due to rheumatism, and he was assessed as unfit for active service. He was returned to Australia aboard the Barambah and was discharged medically unfit on July 30th 1917.
His son George also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
