Biography

Percy Smith was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Driver when he enlisted with the 39th Battalion, 4th Reinforcement on 26 September 1916 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916. He was admitted to hospital from the 10th Training Battalion on 25 January 1917, suffering neurasthenia (a complex of symptoms characterized by chronic fatigue and weakness, loss of memory, and generalized aches and pains). On 24 March 1917 he was diagnosed as suffering from acute rheumatism, and on 25 August 1917 he returned home to Australia.
