Charles Foott (SN 6948) was born in Ballarat and was a 21 year old marine steward when he enlisted in Melbourne on September 28th 1916. He was fined 15 shillings when he overstayed his final leave before he embarked for active service on November 23rd aboard the Horarata and sailed to England where he arrived on January 29th 1917. In May he crossed to France to serve with the 6th Infantry Battalion then in August he was transferred to the 8th Battalion. He avoided major illness or injury and returned safely to Australia, leaving England aboard the Ascanius on September 23rd 1919 and reaching Melbourne on November 6th. He wasn’t finally discharged until November 28th 1920.
Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Charles Toott.
