Born in Ballarat, Walter Maddern was a single 24 year old clerk at the time of his enlistment on the 21st of October 1916 in his birth town. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on the 4th of August 1917.
Walter returned to Australia on the 17th of July 1919 and was discharged due to the termination of his enlistment period on the 16th of August 1919.
