Born in Ballarat, Matthew Oswald Kauffman was a single 24 year old labourer at the time of his enlistment on the 3rd of October 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on the 20th of October 1916.
On the 27th of September 1917 he was wounded in action, he was invalided to the U.K on the 15th of October 1917 and admitted to Graylingwell Hospital, England on the 17th of October.
On the 20th of August 1919 Matthew returned to Australia and he was discharged on the 4th of October 1919 due to the termination of his enlistment period.
