Biography

Daniel Joseph Byrne (SN 2403), born at Yankee Flat, and declared himself to be 24 years old, a bachelor and working as a labourer when he enlisted on October 6th 1916. He embarked just two weeks later on October 20th aboard the Port Lincoln to serve with the 39th Battalion. He reached England in January 1917 then crossed to the battlefields of France in April to serve with the 39th Infantry Battalion. In late May he received a minor gunshot wound, but on June 13th he was seriously wounded and evacuated to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station where he remained until he died of his wounds on June 24th 1917. His brother Edmund and the Australian War Memorial both recorded his age at death as 28 years. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension in France.

His younger brother, John Patrick Byrne, died in France in November 1917.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Daniel J. Bryne.
