Biography

Andrew Wilson Veitch was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a miner when he enlisted with the 59th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on 10 October 1916 at the age of 31. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 16 December 1916. He proceeded overseas to France on 1 September 1917 and was wounded in action a month later, on 4 October, resulting in his evacuation to hospital. The injury proved to be slight and he re-joined his unit in the field on 30 October. Unfortunately, due to gastritis and fibrosis of the lungs he was back in hospital by December and was transferred to England for return to Australia. He returned to Australia 12 May 1919.
