Biography

Leslie Jack Smith (SN 661) was born in Finley, NSW, but attended the Urquhart Street State School in Ballarat. He was an 18 year old pastry cook when he enlisted in Ballarat on October 1st 1914. Drafted to the 14th Infantry Battalion, he embarked from Melbourne just three days before Christmas on board the Ulysses, destined for Gallipoli. On May 27th 1915 he was killed in action at Gallipoli, and is buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
