Richard Thomas Mitchell was born Brunswick and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 8 on 14 November 1916 at the age of 31. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 16 December 1916.
In June he was hospitalised with mumps but in March 1918 he crossed to France attached to the 2nd Pioneers. In July he accidentally scalded his right leg and was evacuated to the Beaufort War Hospital in England. He returned to Australia on the Bakara, disembarking at Melbourne on September 27th 1919.
