William Horace Stanley Williams was born in Clines, VIC and was a School Teacher at Sebastapol when he enlisted in the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 8 on 20 October 1916 at the age of 26. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A7 Medic on 16 December 1916. By the time he reached France he had become ill and was hospitalised. He was diagnosed as suffering from chronic nephritis, a kidney disorder, and was returned to Australia in July 1917 for æhome duties'. He was subsequently discharged as æmedically unfit' for service.
