Thomas David Oliver was born in Ballarat and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted in the 7th Battalion, E Company on 24 August 1914 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A20 Hororata on 19 October 1914. . He served in France with the 1st Pioneer Battalion then with the 1st Machine Gun Battalion. During 1916 he faced several charges of being absent without leave. On July 28th 1918 he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital in England suffering a gunshot wound to the left ankle. On Christmas Eve 1918 he left England on the Takada to return to Australia.
