Samuel Arthur Westerman (SN617/Lt.) was born at Coalville in Gippsland and was a married 23 year old telegraphist when he enlisted in Ballarat on January 9th 1915. Posted to the Anzac Mounted Division he embarked aboard the Runic on February 9th and sailed first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli. His time at Gallipoli was cut short by a bout of influenza that saw him evacuated to Mudros and then to Egypt. From that point he served in Egypt and the Middle East having transfers to the 1st then 4th Signal Troops and promotions to the rank of lieutenant. In early 1918 he was granted four weeks leave to Australia due to his wife’s ill-health, travelling both ways aboard the Wiltshire. When the war ended he returned aboard the Morvada and his appointment was terminated on October 24th 1919.
