Biography

Leslie Doblie (SN 2301) was born at Allendale near Creswick and educated at the Avoca State School. He enlisted as a 19 year old gardener on September 21st 1916 and left Australia a month later, embarking from Melbourne on board the Port Lincoln. He reached England in January 1917 and crossed to France in April to serve with the 39th Battalion. He suffered a severe gunshot wound to his knee just two weeks later and was evacuated to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in France in September but was killed in action near Broodseinde, Belgium, on October 4th 1917. He has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
