Wilfred Stephen Robertson Moodie (SN 646) was born at Omeo and was a 23 year old labourer when he enlisted at Echuca on February 10th 1915. He embarked aboard the Ulysses on May 8th to serve with the 22nd Infantry Battalion. He saw action at Gallipoli before being moved to France in March 1916. His early months in France saw him in trouble for writing obscene words on an official document and for losing his mess tin. In mid-July 1917 he was wounded, gassed, and hospitalised for two weeks. Once recovered he rejoined his unit and was awarded a Military Medal ‘for most conspicuous gallantry and daring during the attack near Beaurevoir East of Peronne on 3.10.18. ……… The prompt and daring action of this N.C.O. enabled the advance to proceed and had a marked effect on the whole of his platoon.' On August 27th 1918, near Villers-Bretonneux, his gallantry again came under notice earning for him a Bar to his Military Medal when ,‘he showed great courage and coolness, and his example of self-sacrifice has had a great effect on the men under him.’ After the war he returned to Australia aboard the Suevic, disembarked at Melbourne on September 10th 1919 and was discharged two months later. He served again in World War 2 (SN N75604).
