Biography

John (Jack) Harris (SN 345/Lt.) was born in Creswick and attended the Creswick State School. He was 23 years old, single and a hairdresser when he enlisted at Creswick on March 15th 1915. As a reinforcement for the 24th Infantry Battalion, he sailed from Melbourne in May on board the Euripides and saw action at Gallipoli from late August. He reached France in March 1916 and in August he was promoted to Lieutenant. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on April 3rd 1917, has no known grave and his name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Jack Harris.
