Bertram Hockings Dewhurst was born in Clunes and listed his trade as a Clerk in holy orders when he enlisted in the Australian Army Chaplain's service on 21 August 1918 at the age of 30. . A month later he crossed to France attached to the 8th Australian Infantry Brigade with whom he served until hostilities ceased. In January 1919 he was attached to the 32nd Battalion. In London on July 22nd 1919 he resigned from his chaplaincy role so as to resume his studies.
