James Powell was born in Sebastapol, VIC and was a Hotelkeeper living in the Phoenix Hotel, Barkly Street, Ballarat with his wife, Mrs. Florence Powell when he enlisted in the No 1 Mining Corps on 16 July 1915 at the age of 44. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 20 February 1916. He transferred to hospital on 1 November 1916 as sick and was transferred to England, to Perham Downs on 14 February 1917. The remainder of his tour fo duty passed without major incident, illness or injury. He was discharged as medically unfit due to rheumatism on 17 May 1918.
