Michael James Trait was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Printer when he enlisted with the 14th Battalion, F Company on 26 September 1914 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 22 December 1914. His tour fo duty was cut short when he was diagnosed with Enteric Fever. He returned home to Australia aboard the Asnanius on 7 September 1915.
