Biography

Herbert Douglas Scanlon (Lt.) was born in Nottingham, UK, and enlisted at Mildura on March 31st 1915. He was 27 years old, single, and employed as a steam pipe fitter. He joined the 22nd Infantry Battalion, embarking from Melbourne in May on board the Ulysses. At the end of August he reached Gallipoli where he was wounded, gassed, but recovered and saw out the Gallipoli campaign during which he reached the rank of Corporal. He was promoted to Sergeant soon after reaching France in March 1916 and again to 2nd Lieutenant in August. Just a couple of days later, on August 5th 1916, he was killed in action at Pozieres, and is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery, France.
