Born in Buninyong, Victoria, Edward McCarty was a single 28 year old farrier at the time of his enlistment in Ballarat on the 6th of July 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT RMS Osterley on the 29th of September 1915.
Edward returned to Australia on the 22nd of July 1919, and was discharged on the 13th of September 1919 due to the termination of his enlistment period.
