Richard Snell was born in Creswick, Victoria, was single and a Photographer when he enlisted with the 29th Battalion, C Company on 19 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and leg on 13 November 1916 and was invalided to England from France in January 1917. He re-joined his unit from wounded in June 1917 and headed back to France, but was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital for diphtheria. He to Australia 13 April 1919.
