Biography

John 'Jack' Snell was born in Allendale, Victoria, was single and a Hat Employee when he enlisted with the 29th Battalion, C Company on 19 July 1915 at the age of 20. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915. On 10 November 1916 he was wounded in the field with a gunshot wound to the right hip and was invalided to England. During his recovery he was admitted to the military hospital, suffering from pneumonia. He later transferred to the 64th battalion from the 29th and was promoted to Lance Corporal. The remainder of his term of service saw his return to the hospital or illness regularly, and he returned to Australia non May 1919.
