Biography

John Joseph Bainbridge Walton was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a clerk when he enlisted with the 11th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement on 9 August 1915 at the age of 22. His unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 2 November 1915. He proceeded overseas to France and was transferred to the 51st Battalion before meeting admitted to hospital as sick on 15 July 1916, later being sent back to England. He would later be hospitalised for suffering from dental issues. On 1 February 1917 he received a promotion to 2nd Corporal. Prior to returning to Australia on 13 February 1920 he was promoted to Sergeant.
