Patrick Joseph Kennedy was born in Smeaton, VIC and was a Labourer by trade when he enlisted from Ballarat in the 23rd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement on 2 August 1915 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 27 October 1915. and joined the 23rd Battalion in France in March 1916. Just a few weeks later in mid-April he was hospitalised with ├Žacute nephritis', first at Camiers in France then in London. He was assessed as unfit for active service and was returned to Australia aboard the Euripides, reaching Melbourne on August 8th 1916.

He died just six months later on February 27th 1917 at the age of 25.
