Biography

George Edward Tilley (SN 2248) was born and educated in Hamilton. He was a 21 year old stockman when he enlisted in Brisbane on May 28th 1915. He joined the 9th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Brisbane just two weeks later on June 12th aboard the Karoola. He reached Gallipoli in early August and soon after transferred to the 8th Light Horse Regiment. After Gallipoli he was attached for a short time to the Royal Flying Corps in Palestine, but he was back with his Light Horse unit when, on April 22nd 1917 he died of wounds sustained during the fighting around Gaza. He is buried in Deir El Belah War Cemetery, Israel.
