Robert John Hogg was born in Ballarat and was a Butcher by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 7 August 1915 at the age of 19. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A40 Ceramic on 23 November 1915. . In March 1916 he was transferred to the 46th Battalion with whom he moved to France in June. It seems he had the good fortune to come through the war without physical injury or significant illness. He returned to Australia on the Warwickshire, reaching Melbourne on May 28th 1919.
