John Clifford Smith was born in Ballarat, Victoria, was single and a Motor Driver when he enlisted with the No 1 Mining Corps on 21 July 1915 at the age of 18. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 20 February 1916. He was appointed as a Lorry Driver in June 1917 and was later attached to the 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company in December of that year. According to his records, other than one issue of absenting himself without permission, for which he awarded a penalty of 2 days' pay, he completed his tour without major incident, illness or injury, returning home to Australia on 6 September 1919.
