Samuel Joseph Geddes was born in Ballarat and was a Wool Classer by trade when he enlisted in the 14th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement on 20 July 1915 at the age of 23. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916. Upon arrival in England he was allotted to the 19th Reinforcements 8th Battalion. In May 1917 he was transferred to the 58th Battalion but he was destined not to reach the battle front. He returned to Australia on the Borda, reaching Melbourne on November 21st 1917. He was discharged on Christmas Eve 1917 as æmedically unfit – neurosis'.
