Samuel Joseph Geddes (SN 6513) born in Ballarat, was a 23 year old wool classer when he enlisted on August 2nd 1915. After some initial training he embarked from Melbourne aboard the Nestor on October 2nd 1916 assigned to the 14th Infantry Battalion. In May 1917 he was transferred to the 58th Battalion but was admitted to hospital shortly after where it was decided he should return to Australia. He returned home aboard the Borda disembarking in Melbourne on November 21st 1917 and was discharged medically unfit on December 24th 1917.

His brother Robert also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
