Biography

Leslie Alfred Mertens was a single 21 year old clerk at the time of his enlistment on the 10th of September 1915. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board H.M.A.T. A32 Themistocles on the 28th of January 1916.
On the 19th of January 1916 he was appointed Sapper.
On the 31st of October 1917, Leslie was reported as having shell shock. He returned to duty on the 2nd of November 1917.
Leslie returned to Australia on the 2nd of July 1919, and was discharged as medically unfit on the 30th of September 1919.
