Biography

Benjamin Wells was born in Ballarat East and was a Diamond Driller when he enlisted in the Victorian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force 'E' Convoy on 14 October 1915 at the age of 38. He joined the 4th Infantry Battalion, Special Tropical Corps, and embarked from Sydney on November 20th on the SS Te Anau and disembarked at Rabaul in early January 1916. He was to spend the entire period of the war at Rabaul although he did return to Australia for two months leave from February to April in 1917. After the war he returned to Australia on the SS Melusia and disembarked at Sydney on December 6th 1919. He was discharged on April 27th 1920 as æmedically unfit – disability – post malarial debility'.
