James Thomas Richards was born in Ballarat and was teaching at Warrenheip when he enlisted on 23rd February 1916. He was 19 years old and single. He was sent to 39th Infantry Battalion, with Regimental No. 572. He was promoted Regimental Sergeant Major. He was killed in action at Messines on 8th June 1917. His name is on Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
