James Thomas Richards (SN 572) was born in Ballarat and was 19 years old and teaching at Warrenheip, when he enlisted on February 23rd 1916. He joined the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne for active service in late May on board the Ascanius. He was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major before arriving in France in November 1916. He was killed in action at Messines on June 8th 1917, has no known grave and his name is on Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. He was 20 years of age.
