Robert Dennis Desmond (302 Lt.) was born in Ballarat and educated at the Christian Brothers School. He was a 24 year old attendant when he enlisted on March 24th 1915. He joined the 21st Battalion but by the time he embarked from Melbourne in May he had transferred to the 6th Infantry Brigade Machine Gun Company. He was killed in action at Bullecourt on May 24th 1917 and has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
His brother John also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
