Biography

Frederick Giffen Holst (SN 2925) was born at Sebastopol and educated at Caulfield Grammar School. He enlisted in Caulfield on July 2nd 1915 as a 20 year old, unmarried, electrical engineer. He embarked from Melbourne on board the Makarini in September and joined the 8th Battalion at Gallipoli in the latter stages of that campaign. After the Gallipoli evacuation he was posted to the 60th Infantry Battalion and reached France in June 1916. On July 19th 1917 he was wounded at Fromelles and died that day, ‘in German hands’. He has no known grave and his name is on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles, France.
