Biography

Arnold Holst (SN 14342), born at Sebastopol, was an 18 year old electrician when he enlisted on February 2nd 1916. He embarked on May 30th aboard the Morea and disembarked at Basra, Mesopotamia, where he went into service with the 1st Australian and New Zealand Wireless Signals Squadron. In June 1917 he was granted a period of leave in India. He proved to be an outstanding young soldier, and in August 1918 he was Mentioned in Despatches by Lt. General Marshall ‘for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty’. After the war he returned home on the Janus, disembarked on April 19th 1919 and was discharged soon after.
