Born in Ballarat, Herbert John James was a married 25 year old compositor at the time of his enlistment in Melbourne, Victoria on the 13th of January 1916. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A11 Ascanius on the 27th of May 1916.
On the 12th of May 1916 he was promoted to Sergeant. On the 24th of April 1917 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant, and on the 28th of July 1917 Herbert was promoted to Lieutenant.
Herbert was awarded the Military Cross on the 18th of January 1918.
His appointment was terminated on the 27th of July 1919.
