William Randle (Capt.) born in Adelaide, was a married 30 year old soldier, a drill instructor in Ballarat, when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the A.I.F. on February 23rd 1916. He embarked from Sydney aboard the Persic on May 30th to serve with the 3rd Division Train. He reached France in November and in December he was promoted to Captain. His service was blemished by a charge of drunkenness in January 1918. After the war he returned to Australia aboard the Orita, disembarked at Melbourne on August 6th 1919 and his commission was terminated on September 21st. He served again with distinction in WW2, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and receiving an M.B.E.
