Biography

John Vincent Standen (SN 1910) was born in Birregurra and educated at Macarthur Street State School in Ballarat. He enlisted on March 10th 1916 as a 26 year old, unmarried dairyman. He was allocated to the 39th Infantry Battalion and embarked from Melbourne on board the Orontes in August. During his service he was promoted to Corporal. On September 27th 1918 he was seriously wounded in the thigh. He was evacuated to hospital in the UK where he died on November 6th 1918. He is buried in Hove Old Cemetery, Sussex, UK.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Vincent J. Standen.
