Biography

Philip James Davies (SN 95) born in Ballarat, was a 20 year old labourer when he enlisted in Ballarat on March 14th 1916. Assigned to the 39th Infantry Battalion he embarked aboard the Ascanius on May 27th and sailed to England before crossing to France in November. In June 1917 he was gassed and hospitalised for a week, but on July 15th 1917 he suffered severe wounds to his back and legs. He was evacuated to England where it was decided he should be returned to Australia. He returned on the Orontes, disembarked at Melbourne on May 10th 1918 and was discharged on September 12th 1918 ‘medically unfit’.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Phillip J. Davies.
