Herbert Flack (SN 1040) born at Natimuk, was a 28 year old farm labourer when he enlisted in Horsham on March 15th 1916. He embarked aboard the Runic on June 20th and sailed to England. He joined the 6th Infantry Battalion in France in September. In September 1917 he was wounded in action, gassed, and evacuated to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in France in March 1918 but was hospitalised with appendicitis before he was gassed for a second time in August. His record shows he went absent without leave on several occasions while he was in England, so it was no surprise to find that on January 3rd 1919 he married Doris Buswell in Northampton. He returned to Australia on the Bahia Castillo, disembarked on June 19th 1920 and was discharged on August 11th.
His brother Phillip also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
