Biography

Francis Walters (SN 2165) was born in Ballarat and attended the Queen Street State School. He was a 42 year old labourer, married to Olivia, when he enlisted May 8th 1916. He joined the 39th Infantry Battalion and sailed from Melbourne in September on board the Shropshire. He reached France in February 1917 where on June 1st 1917 he was killed when an ammunition dump exploded in Ploegsteert Wood. He is buried in the Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert, Belgium.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Frank Walters.
