Biography

Sydney Ross Bennett (SN 15107) born in Ballarat, was a 40 year old postmaster when he enlisted in Perth on April 22nd 1916. Assigned to the 4th Division Signals company he embarked from Fremantle aboard the Surada on September 22nd. He reached France in March 1917 and served without significant incident until he was transferred to the Australian Army Postal Corps in September 1918. After the war he returned aboard the Takada, disembarked on February 1st 1919 and was discharged on March 28th ‘medically unfit, premature senility’.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as S. R. Bennetts.
