Biography

Gordon Evan Flockhart (SN 2075) born in Ballarat, was a 21 year old labourer when he enlisted at Ballarat on May 24th 1916. On September 25th he embarked aboard the Shropshire, reaching England on November 11th. He undertook further training in England until October 1917 when he joined the 39th Infantry Battalion in France. On February 24th 1918 he was wounded in action, suffering a serious gunshot wound to his back. He was evacuated to hospital in England where it was decided he should return to Australia. He returned home aboard the Hospital Transport Matatua, disembarking at Melbourne on August 15th 1918 and being discharged just two weeks later on August 30th as ‘medically unfit, gunshot wound back’.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Gordon E. Flockart.
