Biography

Martin James Young (SN 3902) was born in Ballarat and was a 33 year old railway employee when he enlisted in Melbourne on May 4th 1916. He embarked aboard the Commonwealth on September 19th and reached England in November. Just two months later, on January 22nd 1917, he married Elsie Hinton at Salisbury. He spent 1917 in England at training bases, as a trainee then as a trainer. In January 1918 he crossed to France to serve with the 29th Infantry Battalion but much of his time there was hampered by gastritis. After the fighting had ceased, he was promoted to warrant officer before he returned to Australia aboard the Wahehe and was discharged on July 12th 1920.
