Biography

Frederick William Hendy (SN 2579) born at Ballarat, was a married 34 year old labourer when he enlisted in Perth on August 22nd 1916. He embarked from Fremantle aboard the Argyllshire on November 9th. In September 1917 he was moved to France to serve with the 43rd Infantry Battalion. He was wounded in October suffering a shrapnel wound to his buttock, then in August 1918 he suffered shell concussion. He returned to Australia aboard the Argyllshire, disembarked at Adelaide on September 18th 1919 and was discharged on November 2nd.

Lucas’s Staffs Appreciation of Brave Men, the original Avenue register, records his name as Fred Hendy.
