Biography

John Ellis Jelbart was born in Goroke, VIC and was a Draftsman by trade when he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corps, No 2 Squadron, C Flight on 30 September 1916 at the age of 24. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on 25 October 1916. He reached Plymouth just prior to Christmas and was attached to the 69th Squadron before attending a training course at the Scottish School of Fitters in Edinburgh. In August 1917 he was moved to France, attached to the 3rd Squadron AFC as a mechanic. He safely saw out the rest of the war and returned to Australia on the Armagh, disembarking at Melbourne on May 18th 1919.
