George Laverick (Lt.) born in Ballarat, was a married 27 year old accountant when he enlisted in Ballarat on October 20th 1915. He trained at Broadmeadows and Seymour before commencing officer training at Duntroon. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in October 1916, but that appointment was terminated before the year’s end and he reverted to the rank of sergeant. In April 1917 he was again commissioned and on August 4th he embarked aboard the Themistocles and joined the 5th Infantry Battalion in France in December. In 1918 he was hospitalised with bronchitis which was further aggravated when he suffered gas poisoning. He was returned to Australia aboard the Hospital Ship Malta, disembarked at Melbourne on September 28th 1918 and his appointment was terminated ‘medically unfit’ on December 6th.
