Biography

Duncan Blackburn Tonkinson Blythen (SN 1573) was born in Mt Egerton. He was living in Ballarat East, a 30-year-old farm labourer, when he enlisted on September 9th 1914. He sailed with the second contingent, posted to the 14th Infantry Battalion, to serve at Gallipoli. In May he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his back and chest and was evacuated to the hospital ship Gascon. He died of his wounds and was buried at sea off Gaba Tepe. His name is recorded on the Australian Memorial at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, and on the honour board of the Humffray Street State School. He was 31 years of age.
