Biography

William Henry Luke (SN 3192) was born in Ballarat and attended Pleasant Street State School. He was a 35 year old railway employee when he enlisted in the 57th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement on October 27th 1916. He departed for the war in December on board the <emMedic and arrived in France in May 1917. He was admitted to hospital in October suffering from 'shell shock'. He was fatally wounded during the 2nd Battle of Villers-Bretonneux and died on April 27th 1918. He is buried in the Crouy British Cemetery, France.

His brother Thomas also served in the AIF and is honoured with a tree in the Avenue.
