Biography

Herbert Edward John Stanley (SN 857) was born in Melbourne, but enlisted in Ararat on November 9th 1914. He was a labourer, aged 20 years and unmarried. He joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment. On August 7th 1915 he was killed in action on Walker's Ridge, and is buried in The Nek Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

His brother David also served in the AIF and died of his wounds, and is recognised with a tree in the Avenue.
