Herbert Edward John Stanley (SN 857) was born in Melbourne, but attended Mt. Cole and Urquhart Street State Schools. He was a labourer, aged 20 years and unmarried when he enlisted in Ararat on November 9th 1914. He joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment and embarked from Melbourne in April 1915 bound for Gallipoli. On August 7th 1915 he was killed in the disastrous charge at The Nek and is buried in The Nek Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
His brother David also served in the AIF and died of his wounds, and is recognised with a tree in the Avenue.
