Norman Edward Johnson Schmidt was born in Miram, but on 15th November 1916 he enlisted from Ballarat where he was a draper. He was 18 years old, and single. He joined the 4th Light Horse Regiment Field Ambulance, with Regimental No. 2253. He was killed in action on 1st November 1917, during the fighting at Khuweilfe, and is buried in Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel.
